HIGH SCHOOL

Emily Borawski from the 17/18 Edition

I saw you today,

Or I thought I did.

Before 1st your locker slammed

just as I arrived,

Or did it even open?

I passed you after 2nd

Or you faded around the corner before 4th

In the lunchroom you sat next to me,

like you always did-

The more I wished,

The longer you were by my side.

I saw you today,

Or I thought I did-

Your backpack was next to me.

Then I turned away,

And it was gone;

just like you

During 7th, the numbers floated around the paper;

my thoughts spinning.

You flashed before my eyes;

numbers turned to doodles

the ones you drew so long ago.

The gradient of our friendship

was published in my binder, forever.

from hearts to flowers.

I saw you today,

Or I thought I did-

the letters RIP wear tattooed

across your forehead.

Your memory burned my eyes

as my blue binder morphed into your yellow one.

Wear you in the halls today;

or wear you six feet under?

I saw you today,

Or I thought I did-
